Let's face it, most little boys don't want to sit in a chair doing worksheets. Why don't most school teachers understand this?
Obviously there are times that handwriting must be done and sometimes math must be written, but keeping it short works best for our 6yr old. If he's telling me something is boring then usually it's one of two things; either the work isn't challenging enough or it truly is just to "dry" and not exciting enough. Here are a few of my solutions to help spice up those boring handwriting or math worksheets.
#1 Take the seat work outside. It can be the front porch, grandma's patio or the park. Often a change of scenery and the knowledge that there will be a reward when finished (getting to go play) is all that is needed to get the work done.
#2 Let them make up their own sentences to practice handwriting. They can write about what they enjoy, (Star Wars, Legos, Superheros, etc.) If some of the words are too complicated, then YOU create a fun sentence and let your child copy it. Any words they don't know can be added to their spelling list.
I would love to hear other methods for making seat work more fun.
