Hi!
I will be homeschooling for the first time - my youngest son who is 11 (going into 7th grade).
We live in Satsuma. I work part-time, so this will be interesting.
I currently trying to decide on curriculum and get it ordered.
Any suggestions for language arts, grammar, reading, writing, etc?

Welcome. I have a coming up 9th grade son, 7th grade son, and a 4th grade girl. We have homeschooled all along. We use Bob Jones for most things. It does take some teacher time though. Things would somewhat depend on what kind of reader your son is and what kind of learner he is. I have all kinds practically. My 7th grader practically teaches me. He is easy to school. He has other issues (don't we all), but he is easy to school. Does he need a challenge or remedial? Libraries can help so very much with the reading, but I love BJU's stories. The program also seems to be the closest to the types of skills that most reading tests measure (I am a former school teacher). The Bob Jones grammar includes writing built into its program. What curriculum did your boy use in school before homeschooling? I like Christian curriculum, but keep in mind that Ander's near South AL has all the public schools curriculum available. I used them teaching 4th grade AL history one year.
I hope you enjoy your new change, but know that sometimes the change from school to home is quite an attitude adjustment for both of you! Sometimes housework and paperwork are actually my biggest problems. The best part is the flexibility to take a break when you need to or school through the summer if you need to. We moved this year and are having to school some this summer. It is so hot I actually rather school then and ejoy the Fall and Spring.
Ok, enough of my rambling. If you need or want any help just let me know. I will.

I'm Lesa and welcome to Homeschooling in Mobile.
I have been homeschooling my boys for 6 years. The youngest 10 has never been to school, but my oldest was 10 when we started homeschooling. After a couple of years of try and see we finally settled on Rod & Staff for grammar, Math-U-See for math and just reading books that interest them for reading.
My oldest read all Chronicles of Narnia and the Harry Potter Series on year. He also reads all of the previous Inheritance cycle when a new book comes out. Of course, now that he is in high school he has started reading what is assigned.
My youngest is dyslexia so reading with him is slow in coming. He does read the books assigned with his literature class (we participate in the co-op at Northside Bible Academy).
For writing I've just had them do some books I've picked up and their English assignments. Kenny copies bible verses to improve handwriting (he is also been diagnosed with disgraphia).
I would like to make just a small request: Could you please introduce yourself and your family.

We use Math U See for our math and really like it.
We're trying Applied Grammar for the first time this upcoming school year. I've heard a lot of good things about it, but can say for myself yet. We're also trying All About Spelling too. But again, haven't tried it for myself but have heard nothing but good things about it.
For writing, I like using the Four Square Writing Method for organizing the writing. It really helps my struggling writer.
Hope some of that helps.
Heather
