They are proposing a curfew during the day on kids from 9 to 2:30 that are under 17. This is for being out of the home. CRAZY.
Council meeting is tonight!
ACTION ALERT:
I have just been made aware of the proposed curfew the police department and the Mobile city council are considering for children age 17 and younger. This is in response to the late night shootings downtown perpetrated by youth. The curfew will make illegal the following:
Children under 17 being outside of the home between the hours of 9am and 2:30 pm.
Children under 17 being otuside of the home after midnight.
We are concerned how this will effect the homeschool community. Homeschool families are often out during the day, including field trips, service projects, part-time jobs and other family activities. As of this time, no special policies have been included in the proposed curfew plan, to accommodate homeschooling families, and families will have to carry paperwork with them at all times when they are out.
Please take action by calling, emailing, and/or attending the city council meeting tonight!
TONIGHT: (TUESDAY) 6:30pm in the auditorium at Government Plaza.
A second meeting will be held next Tuesday at the Mobile Regional Senior Community Center on Hillcrest Road. Please share this information with your friends and family in the area.

Dear Council Member ________________,
I reside on _____________ (street) in District _____ (your district number) and am writing to express concern about the proposed curfew presently being considered by the Mobile City Council. We are very active in the Mobile homeschool community and our older children have access, through our homeschool covering, to a wide variety of opportunities, including participation in the Mobile Chapter of the National Homeschool Honor Society, a homeschool debate club, spelling bees, achievement testing, Robotics and other worthwhile educational activities. All of these activities take place outside of the homes of most of our students and most of them take place between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Furthermore, Mobile homeschool children have, for years (and without incident), engaged in co-op classes, part-time jobs and community service projects during the hours of the proposed day-time curfew. Recent community service projects have included work for the Ronald McDonald House, American Cancer Society, Habitat for Humanity, LifeSouth Blood Drive, Hog Wild for Cerebral Palsy, Special Olympics, and many others. Last year alone (2010-2011), the high school students in our particular covering (which is only one of many coverings in the area) volunteered 1,816 documented hours of community service and 577 documented hours of mission service, averaging 70 hours each among 34 students.
We appreciate the service and protection provided by our police department. While we understand that there are arguments to be made for a day-time curfew, we believe that the same objectives might be achieved through enforcement of existing truancy laws or through a very well tailored law that impacts only those children/students with whom the police department is currently having a problem. We are concerned that a day-time curfew will be meaningless without the allocation of significant resources by a police force that is already spread too thin. We are also concerned about the potential impact of a day-time curfew on homeschool students and their families not to mention the clear infringement upon our freedom to come and go.
Homeschool families are no longer a small group in Mobile. We come from a wide variety of social and economic backgrounds. A couple of significant characteristics that we have in common, in my experience, are a desire to provide the best possible education to our children and a desire/willingness to invest the time to achieve that goal. We understand the benefits of a strong public school system and we pay our taxes to fund public school education. However, we choose to educate our children, at additional cost, outside of that public system. We have chosen homeschooling because it allows us to achieve higher academic standards in a safe environment in which we can promote both social and educational activities with a broad spectrum of families/students who share certain core values. Homeschooling also provides flexibility that we feel is essential in teaching our children the importance of landing and maintaining part-time jobs in the afternoons. Such jobs, in addition to a rigorous academic curriculum and schedule, facilitate a strong work ethic that we hope will allow our children to excel in college and beyond. We believe that the proposed curfew could have a serious, negative impact on the ability of our children to engage in educational activities and part-time jobs during the hours of the proposed day-time curfew.
Thank you for considering our concerns regarding a day-time curfew. We are hopeful that you will oppose such a curfew. We would be happy to discuss our concerns with you. Feel free to give us a call at ________________ (your phone number).
